Filtration devices provide secure, liquid-tight seals on membrane filters, allowing filtrates to pass through and precipitates to be collected.  Typical uses include the collection of acid-precipitable material (usually labeled protein or nucleic acid) or immunoprecipitable material (e.g., assays for parasites in freshwater sources).  Once collected on filters, they are dried and quantified.  In some cases, the filtrate is of interest, and is collected as it passes through the membrane.
